Dear Highlights

The following lesson plan uses the "Dear Highlights" section of Highlights for Children magazine and teaches you how to incorporate them into your everyday classroom activities.

Dear Highlights

Work with a partner. Share a magazine.

  1. Read one of the letters. Do Not Read Its Answer. Check with each other to make sure that you understand the problem. Each of you should write down the main point of the problem in note form.

  2. Discuss possible answers with each other. Then both of you should write down your answers in note form.

  3. Compare your answers with the answer in the magazine. Discuss which answer you think is best.

  4. Ask family members what they think. The next day, remember to tell your partner what your family said.

LANGUAGE ARTS -- WRITING
Objective: Take notes and summarize

This activity is for older children however; it could be used as a whole-class activity, oral rather than written, with younger children.
