"Find the Picture" Lesson Plan
Objective: The children will be able to Use Highlights magazine to Find the Pictures and extend their vocabulary and spelling skills independently during center time.

Initiation: The teacher will use Highlights Magazine as an example in small groups and focus on the "Find the Pictures" section and use them as the spelling words for that week.
Development: The teacher will direct the students to the "Highlights Center" when appropriate and have them "Find the Pictures" first. As they find the pictures each student will write down the word that corresponds with the picture they find in the magazine. After they find as many as they can, they will check their spelling against the spelling word list developed by their teacher. The student can work independently or with a partner on these word challenges and extend their spelling skills by moving on to the scrambled words list and/or the word search worksheets depending on their skill level.
Closure: The teacher will discuss the words in small groups and ask any comprehension questions regarding the meaning of the pictures/words and how they relate to the students. For example, if the word is telescope, ask "has anyone ever used a telescope before?" "what are some uses for a telescope?"
Materials: Highlights magazine, scrambled word lists, spelling list, word search, blank paper.
Time: 30-40 minutes.
Extensions: Use the words to develop a story (higher level thinking), or draw your owns pictures (lower level thinking).
