Cereal Box Book Report
By Caroline Wyman

Objective: The children should be able to create a simple book report by identifying main characters, setting and plot. Grade 3-5

Initiation: Talk about the main characters, setting and plot of the most recent chapter book that was read together in class. Make a chart of the information.

Development: After brainstorming the list of characters, setting and plot, show a cereal box book report that has already been completed and read the descriptions and try to see if the class can guess what book you are describing. On the sides of the box the main characters should be listed on a piece of paper to be glued on along with as many adjectives to describe their personalities. On the front, the setting, and the back the plot. Both should have brief describing words and pictures depending on the grade level. Creativity and the use of description is important. Inside the box, the students can put one or two items that are important to the story.

Extensions: Have the class share their book reports.

  • Hand out chapter books according to reading level prior to assignment.

Materials: Large cereal box, glue, colored pencils.

Time: This can be done as a take home assignment or in class assignment.
