Fortune Cookie Verbs

Objective : The students will be able to pick out the verb in a fortune cookie fortune sentence. Grades 3-5

Initiation: Ask if anyone has ever opened a fortune cookie. Ask what their fortune said. Explain that a fortune is a message of good will or advice.

Development: After discussing and sharing fortune cookie messages pass out small strips of paper and have each student write a short fortune of their own on their strip. Make sure each fortune is a positive one that would make someone feel good. For example: You share happiness with everyone you love. The verb is : share. Allow students to share their fortune and discuss the verbs. When everyone is done sharing, pass out real fortune cookies to everyone and allow them to eat their cookie and raise their hand to discuss the verbs in the authentic fortune cookie. Ask questions about the meaning of each fortune and the verb in each one.

Closure: Have each student make a fortune for a family member to take home.

Materials: Strips of paper and fortune cookies

Time: 35-40min.
