Math Regrouping
By Caroline Wyman

Objective: The children will be able to practice regrouping with addition to get the same sum, or subtraction to get the same difference, depending on the level of understanding. Grades k-1

Initiation: Have them recall some simple addition problems by calling out an addition problem.

Development: Call out a number of students to go the front of the room. Tell them to regroup themselves more than one way to come up with the same number of students up there. For example if there are 6 students they can do two groups of 3 or one group with 4 and another with 2. Have them say their numbers and how their group plus the other group equals whatever the total is. Have them figure out different solutions and continue to call up different students with different numbers.

Closure: Tell them that they will continue to learn math in different ways and that math is all around!

Materials: none

Time: 20 min. good transition lesson.
