Math Toss
By Caroline Wyman

Objective: The students will be able to practice their addition, subtraction, or multiplication math facts by playing a fun bean bag toss game. Grades K-3

Initiation: Begin by calling out some math problems (either addition, subtraction, or multiplication depending on where your class is academically) and have the students yell out the answers.

Development: After getting them excited about math, set up 20 coffee cans in a bunched up group of 10 and another separate group of 10 labeled 0-9 on the inside. The class will be divided in half to make two teams. Put a piece of tape on the floor where the students have to stand behind. The object of the game is to try to throw your beanbag into the coffee can that will give you the most points. At he end of the game the team with the most points wins. Once you have tossed a bag into a can twice you have to try for another can. You will need someone to keep track of the numbers for each team. You can easily switch up this game to accommodate your class. You can even give the class a number to toss for and they will have to figure out how to get to that number by tossing into the right cans.

Closure: Finish up by telling the class that everyone did a great job and that math can be practiced through games too!

Materials: 20 coffee cans, bean bags

Time: 30 min.
