Mother’s Day Menu
By Caroline Wyman
Objective: The students will be able to create a menu for their mom on Mother's Day. Grades 1-3

Initiation: Have a discussion with the class as a whole about going out to dinner and how to read a menu. Discuss what comes first on a menu and the order that items are listed. Ask questions about whether or not there are prices on a menu? What might a dessert cost? How would you make chicken nuggets and french fries? Make a list of all the ideas for menus. Make a separate list of how to make something from a menu.
Development: After discussing and charting the class ideas about menus, explain that they will be creating a special menu for their mom on Mother's Day. Explain that the menu should be one that they know that their mom will enjoy. So, if your mom likes spaghetti and meatballs, then make sure it is on the menu. If your mom loves eggs and bacon, then that should be on their menu. Remember to add items like drinks, salad, appetizers, desserts...whatever you think your mom will enjoy. The front of the menu should be your creative illustration and the inside of the menu should have all of the food that your mom might like to eat. Make it special! Use your best handwriting and most imaginative thoughts. It will be up to you and your parents as to whether or not you actually make the food items on your menu for your mom at home. For older and more developed writers, have them make a list of grocery items that they would have to buy in order to create their delicious food items.
Closure: Share menus with each other and help each other to figure out what ingredients are in certain menu choices.
Materials: Folded blank menus, crayons, markers
Time: 45 min.
