Spelling Hoops
By Caroline Wyman

Objective: The students will be able to reinforce spelling skills by spelling a word and shooting a basket. Grades 2-4

Spelling Hopps

Initiation: Split the classroom up into two groups and explain that this is a basketball tournament that their team can win if they can spell the weeks spelling words.

Development: Have four lines taped to the floor. The closest line to the trash can is worth one point, the next line two points, the third line three points, and the fourth and farthest is worth four points. The first person from each team is given a word to spell, if they spell it correctly they get a chance to shoot a tape ball from whichever line they choose. If they make it they get the given point, if they miss they have that number of points taken away. They must choose wisely where they shoot from. The team to receive the most points after all of the words have been spelled wins.

Closure: Have a bonus round with words that are brand new to them.

Materials: spelling list, tape ball, tape, garbage can

Time: 30 min.
