Clara's Closet

By Fay Whitman Manus • Illustrated by Paula Becker

Clara doesn't hang her clothes

in a closet, like cousin Rose.

In Clara's closet, nothing's there.

Her clothes are hanging on a chair—

her new blue jeans,

a sock, a shoe,

a skirt, a shirt,

her tutu, too.

When there's no room

for something more,

she simply drops it

on the floor,

or door, or windowsill,

or bed,

so there's no space

to place her head.

Miles of clothes

lie in piles and heaps...

except in the closet,

where Clara sleeps.
